This Year's Model Updates:

The Grand Cherokee is all new for 2005. Among the improvements are new four-wheel-drive systems, an independent front suspension, three excellent engine options and better ergonomics and build quality.

Pros:
  • Strong engine lineup, unmatched off-road ability, balanced handling, long list of advanced safety equipment, solid warranty.
Cons:
  • Hard plastic interior surfaces could use some padding, less cargo capacity than most midsize SUVs.

  • Dont buy early models of any new car - 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Heater does not work in rear seat; Jeep Customer Service is rude and does not respond even when they give you a case number. Spent the first week and second weekend at the dealer with computer problems.

This is the third Jeep my family has owned and it still lives up to expectations ... a piece of junk. Good year tires make the car vibrate at high speeds (why did I buy a HEMI?). Interior is no good for hauling large items including average sized people. Glove box is small as is the cargo area. DVD is not driver friendly at all. In order to reset the DVD for my daughter, I have to stop and get in the back seat. Oh, and gas mileage. I knew it would be "not so great." But come on 15-16 mpg highway? Tires have leaked multiple times, Seat belt light errors and now air bag errors to fix. Good things are few but include heat seaters (theyre great), exterior styling, HEMI engine minus the mpg.

We have owned this Jeep since it was brand new. The performance is great on the V8, as is the features we have (leather, navigation, DVD, satellite radio) but we take great care of our vehicles, and unfortunately this generation of Grand Cherokee has held up the worst of all of the ones weve owned (weve owned three out of the four generations of Grand Cherokee). The center console lid is worn, the rear DVD headphones broke, etc. They claim it is "quieter than a Jaguar S-Type 3.0", but the transmission is quite noisy. I dont recommend this generation of Grand Cherokee.

Make sure you do your homework. Jeep is having problems with transmission getting water in it. Took mine in yesterday after an oil change place noticed transmission fluid looked like a strawberry shake. Dealership said that problem is with the A/C condensation leaking into the transmission. They had to flush my transmission over 15 times before it turned to normal. Will pickup in the morning and probably take to another dealer and trade in. Service didnt seem to think that this would cause a problem in the future ... year right! This seems to be a big problem for Jeep on the horizon since they are going to have this problem with Grand Cherokees as well as the 300 since they have same transmission.

Bought this Jeep 5 months ago, have had nothing but problems, Had to rebuild front diff, bearings and now the front control module, which was not covered under the warranty... Wish i would have read more about this vehicle before i thought of buying this, i would have changed my mind....Very disappointing, Love the Style of the Jeep but very poor quality, Will trade this in soon as i can and gonna stick with Toyota or Honda.

  • Worst Vehicle I have ever Owned - 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee

We bought the V8, received employee discount, thought we were getting a "good deal". Wrong! Within 3 months needed a manifold gasket replaced. Within a year was in shop no less than 6 times for electrical problems which caused all interior/exterior lights to flash on and off, finally an ignition switch change fixed it. Ball joints replaced due to severe creaking, now at 33,000 it looks like the starter went. This is ridiculous for a vehicle that has this few miles and cost this much. Service at dealership sub par, took complaints to owner, he could care less. (Now sold to another dealer) Now we will take it in the shorts to dump this, not worth what we owe. Will never buy Jeep again!

2005 Grand Cherokee, purchased used 2006 w/ 29,000. Was fine until 35,000 and the Tranny Blew! Heard about it, read about it and then experienced. Love the ride, the storage, but cant get past the transmission problems. Would like to buy another Jeep, but cant forget the burn it gave me the first time. Sorry cant recommend, unless you have $3,000 for a Transmission.
